7-Day Kenya Family Safari: Amboseli, Lake Naivasha & Maasai Mara

Day-by-day itinerary

Route: Nairobi → Amboseli → Lake Naivasha → Maasai Mara → Nairobi

1. Day 1

   Nairobi to Amboseli

   The morning starts in Nairobi, from where you continue overland to Amboseli, travelling south past Kajiado and through Maasai rangeland toward the Tanzanian border country. Travel to Amboseli with a comfort stop and begin with a short wildlife drive suited to the family’s arrival energy. Look for large elephant herds, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, and abundant water birds around the swamps as the light softens through the afternoon. Amboseli is known for its free-ranging elephant families, and on clear mornings Mount Kilimanjaro often rises above the plains, though cloud can hide it. The vehicle and driver-guide are private to your party throughout. You return for dinner and an overnight stay at Amboseli.

2. Day 2

   Full-Day Amboseli Safari

   Balance early and late drives across the plains with a generous lodge or camp break during the middle of the day. You travel through open plains, dust flats and spring-fed swamps beneath the bulk of Kilimanjaro, working the areas your guide judges most productive on the day. Keep watch for large elephant herds, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, and abundant water birds around the swamps as you move between the different habitats. The swamps stay green through dry months, drawing elephants and plains game into concentrated, highly photographable groups. Amboseli is known for its free-ranging elephant families, and on clear mornings Mount Kilimanjaro often rises above the plains, though cloud can hide it. The vehicle and driver-guide are private to your party throughout. You return to your camp or lodge for dinner and a second night at Amboseli.

3. Day 3

   Amboseli to Lake Naivasha

   You leave Amboseli after breakfast and head for Lake Naivasha, following the Rift Valley escarpment road with its long views over the valley floor. Make the longer transfer north with planned stops, then settle beside Lake Naivasha for a restful evening. Your guide works the area for hippo, waterbuck, colobus and an exceptional range of resident and migratory waterbirds, with sightings varying by season and conditions. Naivasha is one of the few freshwater lakes in the Rift Valley, which is why boat trips and walking safaris are possible here rather than vehicle drives alone. You return for dinner and an overnight stay at Lake Naivasha.

4. Day 4

   Lake Naivasha Family Day

   Use the day for confirmed age-appropriate lake, nature or nearby activities, leaving time for the family to slow down. This is a freshwater Rift Valley lake fringed by papyrus, fever trees and flower-farming country. Species commonly associated with the area include hippo, waterbuck, colobus and an exceptional range of resident and migratory waterbirds. You return to your lodge or camp in Lake Naivasha for dinner and overnight.

5. Day 5

   Lake Naivasha to Maasai Mara

   The day opens in Lake Naivasha with a morning departure for Maasai Mara, descending the wall of the Great Rift Valley and passing through Narok and Maasai farming country. Continue to the Maasai Mara and take an introductory game drive only if timing and the family’s comfort make it worthwhile. There is the possibility of seeing lion, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, buffalo and large herds of plains game, depending on movement and conditions on the day. The reserve is best known for its big cat densities, and between roughly July and October the wildebeest migration commonly moves through the ecosystem. You return for dinner and an overnight stay at Maasai Mara.

6. Day 6

   Full-Day Maasai Mara Safari

   Explore in manageable wildlife-drive windows, building the route around interest, weather and current animal movement. Your route takes in open savanna grassland, acacia stands and the rolling country of the greater Mara ecosystem, with your guide reading recent movement to decide where to spend time. Sightings may include lion, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, buffalo and large herds of plains game, depending on season and conditions. A full day allows morning and late-afternoon drives when animals are most active, with the option of a picnic lunch out in the reserve. The reserve is best known for its big cat densities, and between roughly July and October the wildebeest migration commonly moves through the ecosystem. Dinner and overnight are again at your Maasai Mara camp or lodge.

7. Day 7

   Maasai Mara to Nairobi

   The day opens in Maasai Mara with a morning departure for Nairobi, returning through the highland approaches to the city. Return to Nairobi with breaks and a final drop-off arranged around the family’s onward schedule. Expect a straightforward road journey, with the exact timing depending on conditions. Nairobi is the arrival and departure hub for most Kenyan safari itineraries. The day ends with a drop-off in Nairobi at your hotel or the airport.
