Journey overview

This seven-day Mount Kenya expedition combines the Naro Moru trekking approach with Point Lenana acclimatisation and a serious technical ascent of Nelion and Batian before descending toward Chogoria. The technical section is for experienced multi-pitch climbers and requires a specialist technical guide, ropes and appropriate personal climbing equipment.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Nairobi to Naro Moru Gate and Met Station

    Transfer from Nairobi to Naro Moru, complete park formalities and begin the mountain approach through the forest to Met Station for the first mountain night.

  2. Day 2

    Met Station to Mackinder's Camp

    Climb through the moorland and Teleki Valley to Mackinder's Camp, gaining significant altitude and preparing for the upper mountain.

  3. Day 3

    Mackinder's Camp to Austrian Hut

    Ascend from Mackinder's Camp to Austrian Hut. The afternoon is used for rest, acclimatisation and preparation for the summit and technical section.

  4. Day 4

    Point Lenana and Peak Circuit

    Make an early ascent to Point Lenana, then return to the Austrian Hut area for rest and final technical preparation.

  5. Day 5

    Technical Climb to Nelion

    Under a specialist technical climbing guide, attempt Nelion via the South Face/Normal Route. The climb involves exposed multi-pitch rock climbing. Overnight is in the upper mountain according to the guide's safe operating plan.

  6. Day 6

    Nelion to Batian Attempt and Descent Toward Chogoria

    When conditions and the guide's assessment allow, attempt the traverse from Nelion toward Batian via the Gate of the Mists, then descend by the approved technical route and continue toward the Chogoria side and Meru Mount Kenya Bandas.

  7. Day 7

    Chogoria to Nairobi

    Complete the descent to the Chogoria side, meet the transfer vehicle and return to Nairobi.
