Journey overview

Give Mount Kenya more time with this six-day Sirimon-to-Chogoria trek. The programme follows the gradual Sirimon approach to Old Moses and Shipton’s Camp, uses an additional acclimatisation stage around the high mountain, then attempts Point Lenana before descending the Chogoria side.

Compared with the five-day traverse, the extra day can improve pacing and high-altitude adaptation while also allowing trekkers to experience more of the alpine environment before summit day.

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

Nairobi to Sirimon Gate and Old Moses Camp

Travel from Nairobi to Sirimon Gate via the Mount Kenya foothills. Complete registration and begin the gradual hike to Old Moses Camp. Keep the first day deliberately steady and use the evening for hydration, rest and briefing.

  2. Day 2

Old Moses Camp to Shipton’s Camp

Climb through open moorland toward the Mackinder Valley and Shipton’s Camp. The day introduces higher altitude and the dramatic upper-mountain landscape. Arrive at camp, rest and monitor how the group is adapting.

  3. Day 3

    Shipton’s Camp — Acclimatisation Day

Spend a full acclimatisation day based at Shipton’s Camp. The guide may lead a controlled hike to a nearby higher point before returning to camp. The objective is gradual altitude exposure without unnecessary fatigue.

  4. Day 4

Shipton’s Camp to Mackinder’s Camp via the High Mountain

Traverse part of the high mountain under the direction of the guide and continue toward Mackinder’s Camp. This stage adds variety and spreads the altitude workload before summit day. The exact peak-circuit line should follow current trail and weather conditions.

  5. Day 5

Mackinder’s Camp to Point Lenana and Mount Kenya Bandas

Begin before dawn for the Point Lenana summit attempt. Continue only if conditions and the group’s altitude response are satisfactory. After the summit attempt, descend onto the Chogoria side through the high alpine landscape and continue toward Mount Kenya Bandas for the final mountain night.

  6. Day 6

Mount Kenya Bandas to Chogoria and Nairobi

Complete the descent through the Chogoria side, meet the transfer vehicle at the confirmed pickup point and continue to Chogoria town. Travel onward to Nairobi and conclude the six-day trek.

Safari FAQs

What is the advantage of six days over five?

The extra day allows a more gradual high-altitude programme and can reduce the need to compress acclimatisation and traversing into fewer stages.

Does this route include Point Lenana?

Yes, the itinerary includes a Point Lenana summit attempt before descending by Chogoria.

Is the exact peak-circuit route fixed?

The high-mountain line can depend on conditions. The operator should confirm the current standard route used between Shipton’s and Mackinder’s.

Is summit success guaranteed?

No. Altitude response and mountain conditions can require changes to the plan.
