Journey overview

Take a more measured approach to Mount Kenya’s direct western route with this five-day Naro Moru trek to Point Lenana. An acclimatisation and gear-preparation day around Naro Moru precedes the mountain ascent, followed by Met Station, the Vertical Bog, Mackinder’s Camp and a pre-dawn attempt on Point Lenana at 4,985 metres.

The additional day at the base makes this a more sensible choice than the compressed four-day version for many trekkers, although high-altitude travel always requires flexibility and summit success can never be guaranteed.

Safari Highlights

  • Base acclimatisation and gear preparation in Naro Moru
  • Naro Moru forest and moorland zones
  • Vertical Bog and Teleki Valley

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Day 1

Nairobi to Naro Moru — Acclimatisation and Preparation

Travel from Nairobi to Naro Moru on the western side of Mount Kenya. Use the afternoon for rest, gear inspection and a gentle acclimatisation walk if appropriate. The guide should confirm clothing, footwear, hydration strategy and any equipment still needed before entering the national park.

  2. Day 2

Naro Moru Gate to Met Station

Transfer to Naro Moru Gate, complete park formalities and begin trekking through the forest zone toward Met Station. Maintain an easy pace and allow the body to continue adapting to altitude. Overnight at Met Station or the confirmed equivalent camp.

  3. Day 3

    Met Station to Mackinder’s Camp

Climb above the forest into moorland and continue through the Vertical Bog section toward the Teleki Valley. Reach Mackinder’s Camp at high altitude beneath Mount Kenya’s main peaks. Rest, hydrate and prepare for the summit attempt.

  4. Day 4

Mackinder’s Camp to Point Lenana and Return to Met Station

Leave before dawn for the summit attempt on Point Lenana at 4,985 metres. The final approach is steep, rocky and exposed to rapidly changing mountain weather. Continue only if the guide considers conditions appropriate. After the summit attempt, descend to Mackinder’s Camp for a break before continuing to Met Station.

  5. Day 5

Met Station to Naro Moru Gate and Nairobi

Descend through the forest to Naro Moru Gate after breakfast. Meet the transfer vehicle and return to Nairobi, where the climb ends at the agreed drop-off point.

Safari FAQs

Why choose five days instead of four on the Naro Moru Route?

The extra base day allows more preparation and gradual altitude exposure before the main ascent.

What is the Vertical Bog?

It is a well-known moorland section on the Naro Moru Route that can become very wet and muddy after rain.

Do I need technical climbing experience for Point Lenana?

No technical multi-pitch rock-climbing background is normally required for the standard Point Lenana trek, but good fitness and high-altitude preparation are important.

Can bad weather stop the summit attempt?

Yes. The guide may change or stop the summit attempt because of weather, snow or ice, altitude illness, trail conditions or group safety.
