Journey overview
Climb Kilimanjaro on the six-day Machame Route, a camping itinerary that approaches from the southwest, crosses the Shira Plateau and uses the Lava Tower acclimatisation profile before reaching Barranco and Barafu. The summit is attempted from Barafu, with descent by the separate Mweka Route.
The six-day version combines the Barranco–Karanga–Barafu section into one long day rather than sleeping at Karanga, so it is more demanding than the seven-day Machame programme.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1
Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Complete registration at Machame Gate and trek through rainforest to Machame Camp.
Day 2
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Climb out of the forest and continue through heath and moorland onto the Shira Plateau.
Day 3
Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp
Ascend toward Lava Tower for high-altitude exposure, then descend to Barranco Camp to sleep lower.
Day 4
Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
Climb the Barranco Wall and continue through the Karanga Valley to Barafu Camp in one long stage. Rest and prepare for summit night.
Day 5
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp
Begin before dawn and climb toward Stella Point and Uhuru Peak if conditions allow. Descend through Barafu toward Mweka Camp.
Day 6
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Descend through the forest to Mweka Gate and connect with the confirmed transfer.
